MDT: How to correctly update password protected BIOS

Hi all,

I'm trying to make a sequence to update the bios for our HP laptops. I have the needed bios update files etc, but the bios is protected with a password. I used PQPswd.exe to create a password file.

I currently use:
HpFirmwareUpdRec64.exe -s -pBPF.bin -r -b

This is the bios configuration I'm running:
BiosConfigUtility64.exe /cspwdfile:BPF.bin /nspwdfile:BPF.bin

But the log returns the following when trying the sequence:
@{commandTitle=Setting BIOS password; stdout=<BIOSCONFIG Version="" Computername="Laptop" Date="2021/07/30" Time="12:58:58" UTC="2">
<ERROR msg="Unable to process command. Password is set, but no password file is provided" />
<ERROR msg="BCU return value" real="10" translated="10" />
</BIOSCONFIG>
; stderr=; ExitCode=10}

Seems like it does not read the password file. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Re: MDT: How to correctly update password protected BIOS

hello

may be you created the password file with an old utilty. when you extract a softpaq containing a BIOS , the utilty to create the password ifle is HpqPswd.exe.

HpFirmwareUpdREC64 is missing the -f option to specify in which folder is the BIOS bin file.

which version of BiosCOnfigUtility are you using ?

bye

Re: MDT: How to correctly update password protected BIOS

Hi,

Thanks for your response, I'll check the version of the biosconfig tool soon.

So the configuration seems to be right with the right parameters you think?

Best regards,

Jony

Re: MDT: How to correctly update password protected BIOS

The BiosConfigUtility64 is on version 4.0.26.1

And the password file is in the same folder as the HpFirmwareUpdRec64.exe so I don't think the location has to be specified.

Re: MDT: How to correctly update password protected BIOS

I've pesonally had multiple issues with BIOS firmware updates randomly not reading the password BIN file correctly. I've switched to using task sequences with a combination of BCU and FW UpRec to remove the BIOS password first, run the BIOS FW update, then reapply the password after. Something like this...

BiosConfigUtility64.exe /cspwdfile:"BPF.bin" /nspwdfile:""
HpFirmwareUpdRec64.exe -s -r -b
(reboot)
BiosConfigUtility64.exe /nspwdfile:"BPF.bin"
