MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Three Questions/Issues/Comments:

  1. I configured Patch Assistant for a testing collection to report only. The scheduled date has passed, and the Patch Assistant dashboard still shows "Devices: 0" and no other data.
  2. How do we reconfigure Patch Assistant settings for collections that have already been configured? The testing collection mentioned in #1 does not show up in the "Selected Collections" list when clicking "Configure HP Patch Assistant" from the dashboard. I see no other way to change settings for that testing collection, if I wanted to change it from "Report" to "Report and Remediation." That test collection does show in the list under "Filter Dashboard." Changing the filter from "All" to "Selected" has no effect on data shown under "Devices Health Status" (see #1).
  3. When configuring Patch Assistant, the "Selected Collections" dropdown menu appears to list the collections randomly. Without this list be alphabetized (or searchable), it makes it very difficult to find a specific collection in an environment with hundreds of collections.

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

At a high level, the following information may help understand how HP PatchAssistant works within the MEM ConfigMan world...

Process Flow:

  • IT Configures Policy
  • IT Pushes Policy to device Collection
  • Policy is Evaluated on each device – returning successful (or failure) evaluation to CM Console
  • based on Policy, CM agent schedules Task (E.g., run Patch Assistant)
  • CM agent on client device executes Task in its time window
  • Patch Assistant executes, generates run Report
  • Patch Assistant forces CM agent H/W inventory sync
  •     If ‘Trigger H/W inventory’ selected in Policy configuration
  • Patch Assistant Dashboard on CM console gets updated

In essence, HP Patch Assistant is a packaged version of HPIA 5.1 and it gets automatically downloaded and executed on each device in the collection based on the desired schedule. As HPIA, it will obtain all its files and softpaqs from HP's cloud, which means the endpoints require Internet access rights by the same persona the CM agent runs as. It can, however, be configured to point to a local hosted repository managed by HP CMSL commands, if needed

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Dan, thank you for the reply, however this does not address my original questions. I'll copy them below for reference.

Part of what it boils down to as that HPPA has been assign and deployed to a testing collection, and the time window has passed. However, no data from the collection has been returned to HPPA in the ConfigMgr console.

Hi,

Have you installed "HP MIK Client" on Hosts?
On Documentation it suppose not needed for Patch Assistant, but actually is! Hp MIK Client includes HPIA package that is necessary.
I had exactly the same problem, solved after deployment of MIK Client on Hosts.

You should check the Scheduled tasks on hosts. There are one Task in HP folder that trigger the Patch Assistant. Try to run it.
You can check Event Viewer too there are a section on other application events.

Hope it helps.

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Hi, thanks for the reply.

No I have not installed the client yet due to separate issues with the client package content that should have been created when MIK was installed. I opened a separate forum topic for that issue - https://developers.hp.com/hp-client-management/forum/what-content-needs-go-hp-client-support-tools-and-bcu-packages-mik. Essentially, the client package is there in the console, but there was no file content created for the package.

This would still leave the issue of how to change Patch Assist settings on a collection it was previously deployed to.

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

make sure you install the MIK on the main MEM CM server, otherwise, some of the installation packages will not be there

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Just to clarify... Patch Assistant (HPPA) requires that each clien device in the collection have the MIK client/agent installed... This agent attaches itself as a resource to the CM agent and takes on the HP tasks from the CM agent... The process for HPPA will NOT work if the MIK agent is not deployed

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

I have the same issues where the HP Patch Assistant is showing 0 devices even after the compliance baselines show as being ran and the hardware scans have ran. Was there every a resolution on this?

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Not that I've found so far. Haven't heard anything helpful from HP. The Image Assistant program does a relatively decent job of updating drivers (not BIOS though). I'll continue using that until more bugs have been worked out of MIK/PA.

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Because CM is not a real time engine, where the CM agent checks in on a regular bases with the console, there are always delays in seeing the results of applied polices... here is a high level list of how things work with HPPA... hope this makes sense

•IT Configures Policy

•IT Applies Policy to device Collection

•CM Agent on each device checks in during its polling interval (defaults to every 60 minutes)

•Policy is Evaluated on each device – returning success/fail evaluation to Console

Meaning: The pushed policy was successfully evaluated on the client machine

•CM agent schedules a Windows Task on the device (every device in the selected collection)

•Windows Task Scheduler executes task (E.g., run Patch Assistant with appropriate runtime options)

•Patch Assistant executes and generates Report (Report ends up in WMI)

•Patch Assistant forces CM agent H/W inventory sync

--- If ‘Trigger H/W inventory’ selected in Policy configuration

•CM agent checks in and updates console

•Patch Assistant Dashboard on CM console gets updated

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Figured I would share an update on my end since I was able to get my machine to report in finally.Taking the info from dan.felman reponse I opened scheduled tasks on a test machine and tried to manually run the task that was scheduled under HP/HP Patch Assistant to see what would happen. I found that it kicks off a powershell script at C:\ProgramData\HP\MIK\RunHPIA.ps1. In my case though our antivirus was blocking the powerhsell script from executing. I had the path set as an exception and tried again (also set the HP Image Assistant settings in SCCM to Trigger Hardware Inventory Update for my test collection as I had not at first). After this was setup and I manually reran the scheduled task and waited for the hardware Inventory to run.  My machine showed up in the reporting under HP Patch Assistant in ConfigMgr. within 30-45 mins after running this.

Re: MIK - Patch Assistant: Empty Dashboard + Changing Settings

Refer section in user guide for View Report for a device collection , instead of view report select Configure Settings.

Users can configure HP Patch Assistant for a specific device collection, by selecting a device collection under SCCM “Device Collection” node and right-click, from the menu option for HP Patch Assistant, select Configure Settings.
